Daniel Stevenson MCNC 3021 Cornwallis Road P.O. Box 12889 Research Triangle Park, North Carolina 27709 Abstract. We present a formal protocol description for a just-in-time (JIT) signaling scheme running over a core dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) network that utilizes optical burst switches (OBSs). We apply an eight-tuple extended finite state machine (EFSM) model to formally specify the protocol. Using the EFSM model, we define the communication between a source client node and a destination client node through an ingress and one or multiple intermediate switches. We work on on-the-fly and persistent unicast connections. The communication between the EFSMs is handled through messages. © 2003 Society of PhotoOptical Instrumentation Engineers. Protocol Specification Using Parameterized Communicating Extended Finite Stte Machines - A Case Study of The ATM ABR Rate Control Scheme

Formal specifications are indispensable for computeraided verification and testing of communication protocols. However, a large number of the practical protocols, including ATM, have only informal specifications, mostly in English. There are no general procedures to derive formal specifications from such informal specifications. As a case study, we consider an important protocol specification A...

Analysis of Security Protocols using Finite-State Machines

This paper demonstrates a comprehensive analysis method using formal methods such as finite-state machine. First, we describe the modified version of our new protocol and briefly explain the encrypt-then-authenticate mechanism, which is regarded as more a secure mechanism than the one used in our protocol. Then, we use a finite-state verification to study the behaviour of each machine created f...

Automatic Test Case Generation of the Behavior of Communication Software Systems

This paper addresses the problem of automatically generating test cases of the behavior of communication software systems, the protocols, which are usually specified in Extended Finite State Machines. The specification technique Statecharts is considered here for specifying the protocol behavior with the objective of using its descriptive power of the hierarchy, orthogonality and synchronizatio...

Problems and Methods for Testing Infinite State Machines: Extended Abstract

There has been a lot of research on testing based on formal specifications, especially in the area of communication protocols. Most approaches take as starting point some finite model of the required behaviours of the system under test, such as Finite State Machines. This paper discusses the problems that arise when the underlying model of the specification is not finite.

Specification of Timed EFSM Fault Models in SDL

In this paper, we apply our timing fault modeling strategy to writing formal specifications for communication protocols. Using the formal language of Specification and Description Language (SDL), we specify the Controller process of rail-road crossing system, a popular benchmark for real-time systems. Our extended finite state machine (EFSM) model has the capability of representing a class of t...
